Dog Activities
A
well balanced dog as a family member needs some form of regular physical and
mental exercise. However, it can sometimes be difficult to see beyond a walk
around the block. Especially if you work all day, sometimes the last thing you
want to to is go out again, in the wind and rain. I find that most dog
behavioural problems stem from boredom and inactivity and if you can find
something that fits your lifestyle, brilliant, because you will start to enjoy
the company of your dog.
What you can do with your dog is limitless, but obviously is dependant on your circumstances, mobility, where you live, what breed of dog you have, hours that you work, family commitments etc. etc.
It is my aim to provide as much information as possible on these pages regarding the clubs and various games and sports that are out there for dogs, however, for the most part you will want something that you can do on your own doorstep, or even in your own home if you don't feel like going out.
So above all I recommend that you should first train your dog and see that as an activity or game, it is something you can do at home, and using the methods I recommend here you can train your dog to do anything. Therefore, if you can't get out for some reason you could train your dog to retrieve various items from around the house, which achieve 2 goals, mental and physical stimulation.
Remember if you start a new game or club or sport, you will have to train your dog anyway to participate, therefore it makes sense to train your dog, or more importantly understand how to train your dog, so that you can introduce it all manner of new and exciting environments.
The following online course explains the method I use to train my own dogs, dogs that come to my training classes and rescue/shelter dogs. It is a training system based on positive reinforcement and not traditional correction based dog training. The results are amazing and you really benefit from improving your relationship with your dog.
If you are serious about doing something for you and your dog, then this is by far the cheapest and easiest to jump into, training is not just about sit, stay and heel, its about shaping wanted behaviours and every person is different, therefore, the behaviours we require are different, but how cool would it be if you could train your dog to run around the block it self!!!!!!!!!
If you are serious about doing anything with your dog, I can't stress enough how important it is to understand how to train your dog, more importantly how to introduce new behaviours, in a calm and fun manner.
For the price of one dog training lesson or some overrated toy or membership to a club, teach yourself to teach your dog and you will be amazed at what you can achieve.
There are no secrets or magic solutions, however, the surprising thing is, just how simple the above method is and you can be started in five minutes! So go on do yourself and your dog a favour and impress your friends and family in the process.
